MANITOWOC – When looking for gardening tips, why not go straight to the experts?
Every summer I head to 6.1 acres of carefully manicured gardens that make up West of the Lake, 915 Memorial Drive. These gardens are located at the former residence of well-known Manitowoc philanthropists John and Ruth West.
After the Wests built their home (now headquarters for the West Foundation) in 1934, Ruth West took a strong interest in gardening, and started with a path garden that led the way to Lake Michigan. The gardens were expanded over the years and continue to grow.
Each year, I marvel at the symmetry of the gardens, the perfect combination of colors and the lack of weeds! I like to think I have somewhat of a green thumb, and although my flower beds aren’t likely to reach the level of West of the Lake, I spent an afternoon with head gardener Don Cisler to learn more.
